Biography
Dr. Anwar Haque is an avid researcher and a seasoned telecom industry professional with 20+ years of industry and research experience in the area of communication networks/IoT, cyber security, and autonomous systems. Dr. Haque’s primary research areas of interest include network QoS, network security and reliability, and smart systems and their applications. Dr. Haque received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He also received M.Math degree in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo; M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Windsor; and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the North South University. He received various management/professional training from Schulich School of Business, York University.
Dr. Haque is a faculty member and Faculty of Science Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Western University, Canada. He is a recipient of the Faculty of Science Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision at Western. Prior to his academic appointment at Western, Dr. Haque spent fifteen years of his career in Canadian Telco industry (Bell Canada) as a Researcher, Manager, and Associate Director in Network Technology, Network Planning and Operations, and Business Decision Support teams. He is one of the master planners of Bell`s nationwide state-of-the-art IP MPLS core networks that is recognized as Canada’s most advanced and largest IP MPLS core footprint. His technical contribution and leadership in developing network directives, models, metrics, and methods and processes were critical in assisting Bell teams in meeting their corporate objectives. During his tenure at Bell, for his outstanding technical contributions and strong leadership, he received a number of awards and recognitions.
Dr. Haque has made significant scholarly contribution in his field of research. He authored more than 100 technical papers in leading peer-reviewed intl. journals, conferences, and book chapters in the area of broadband networks performance/resource management, network security and autonomous systems. He also holds several patents/licenses, and supervised more than 100 Highly Qualified Professionals (HQPs). He has served as TPC member for numerous international conferences, reviewer for major journals, conference session chair, and invited guest speaker at various industry-academia forum/conferences.
Dr. Haque is a proven champion of Canadian industry-academia partnerships. For more than two decades, his relentless effort and leadership in promoting high value multi-million research projects partnering with industry, Universities, and Govt funding agencies led to many industry-academia success stories. His collaborative research grants are valued at more than $15 million. These grants have been supported by NSERC, MITACS, OCI, Environment Canada, the National Cybersecurity Consortium (NCC), various Western University grants such as the Bell-Western 5G (BW5G) program, and several industry partners.
Dr. Haque has demonstrated exemplary service to Western University and the broader research community through his leadership, mentorship, and collaboration. As Industry Expert in Residence (2016–2021), he established long-term ICT industry partnerships, including the Bell-Western 5G research program, and supported over 30 projects across 16 faculty members. He has served (as member or chair) on more than ten departmental committees, including the Appointment Committee, Performance Evaluation Committee, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, and Undergraduate Awards Committee. Additionally, he has contributed to Faculty of Science committees such as the FoS Nominating Committee, FoS Research Council, and Senate Subcommittee on Information Technology and he has played a key role in the Inaugural Advisory Committee for the Bell-Western 5G Research program. Dr. Haque also served as the member of the Western Senate for 2021-2023. Dr. Haque has made significant contributions to the research community as an associate editor for three leading journals, technical program committee member for over 50 conferences, and a reviewer for 20+ international journals. He also served as the reviewer for various NSERC and MITACS grants, served as the grant committee member for ORF and NFRF. Dr. Haque has served as industry relations chair for nine IEEE conferences. In 2022, Dr. Haque received the Western Newsmaker Award for sharing his insights as a subject matter expert through major media outlets, including BBC Earth.
One of Dr. Haque’s key goals is to establish a major industry-academia research consortium to conduct cutting-edge research aimed at addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. By leveraging advancements in communication and autonomous systems, this initiative seeks to provide innovative solutions to global problems. This unique, multi-purpose platform will not only strengthen Western University’s existing partnerships with industry and external academic institutions but also enhance its reputation and leadership on the global stage.
