Summary
Smart signaling at intersection solutions are enabled by V2X, data, and AI technologies. As opposed to using traffic lights for scheduling traversals of vehicles at intersections, the concept of intersection management with smart signaling seeks to develop customized, fine-grained drive-through schemes while considering the goals of traffic flow optimization, idling time reduction, and collision avoidance. Some of the key challenges with regards to V2X-enabled intersection management include: (a) development of efficient methods that ensure effective cooperative system scheduling, (b) accurate and real-time fault detection, control, and management mechanisms to ensure system resiliency against failures, (c) ultra-reliable and ultra-low latency V2X communication, and (d) fast and low complexity computation for traversal scheduling. Our proposed novel smart-traffic-signaling framework, by sensing vehicles on-road real-time data, will develop traffic routing algorithms to determine the optimal signaling sequences to improve throughput at the intersactions without collisions. As an add-on feature, prioritization of emergency vehicles and VRUs (Vulnerable Road Users) can also be implemented within our framework.
