Summary
Quantum Supremacy is the idea of having a quantum computer that can compute the solution to a problem within a feasible amount of time that no classical computer can. The emergence of quantum computers is expected to change the meaning of network security as we know it. Quantum Computers are particularly good at solving mathematical problems that are considered hard to solve today (that we employ for communication network encryption). This will leave everything we secure using encryption at risk. In this presentation, I will discuss: (a) the algorithms that quantum computers use to solve hard problems, (b) the associated risks involved in next-generation network security, (c) short-term and long-term encryption strategies to address the security challenges, and finally, (d) the ongoing research and the timeline when quantum-proof encryption is standardized and should be adopted.
