CS1033 Multimedia and Communications
Assignment 2
You have been approached by the Epilepsy Support Centre to design a poster to educate the public and promote awareness of Epilepsy Awareness Month. The Centre will distribute this poster to public schools, high schools, colleges, universities, workplaces and community organizations.
Your poster MUST:
-
be catchy and/or creative and/or inventive and/or beautiful and/or clever and tasteful...figure out a way that you will get people to look at this poster!
-
engage people of all ages and get them to contact the Epilepsy Support Centre to learn more about epilepsy and seizures.
-
include the key messages: "My seizures are proof I have a brain. Get seizure smart to prove you can use yours." and "March is Epilepsy Awareness Month"
Note: Wording can be changed. The focus should be on public education and awareness. NOTE: you can change the wording if you wish but you MUST somehow indicate:
-
March 26, is Purple Day for Epilepsy and March is Epilepsy Awareness Month
-
the Epilepsy Support Centre is there to:
-
Support people with epilepsy and their families
-
Raise awareness, dispel myths and break down the stigma of epilepsy
-
Educate communities about epilepsy and seizure first aid.
-
include at least 3 facts about Epilepsy, for example:
-
1 in 100 Canadians are diagnosed with epilepsy
-
300,000 Canadians are diagnosed with epilepsy
-
1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime
-
NOTE: you can use these facts or find some other ones that you think would educate the public and/or enhance your poster and your poster's message
-
include the Epilepsy Support Centre logo (Purple is the preferred logo but the white and black logos could also be used. Do NOT change the colours of the logo and while you can resize the logo, do NOT change the width to height ratio and do NOT rotate the logo)
-
use purple somehow in your colour palette as purple is the international colour for epilepsy awareness (the shades of purples you should be using are: Dark Purple RGB: 98 49 145 AND Light Purple RGB: 153 149 201)
-
include the following contact information:
-
Address: 690 Hale Street, London, Ontario, N5W 1H4
-
Toll Free Phone Number: 1-866-EPILEPSY
-
Phone number for each of the 4 offices:
-
London/Middlesex: 519 433 4073
-
Sarnia/Lambton: 519 330 0416
-
Chatham/Kent: 519 365 5131
-
Windsor/Essex: 519 890 6614
-
Website Address: www.epilepsysupport.ca
If you need some more inspiration, more information about the organization and support for epilepsy can be found at:
Now to make this really interesting:
A representative from the Epilepsy Support Centre will be picking the top 3 posters. Your mark will NOT be made available to her, but she will be choosing based on the look and the content of the poster. The top three posters may actually be printed and then used to advertise the event. TRY TO MAKE YOUR POSTER ONE OF THE CHOSEN POSTERS, it will look great on your resume!
NOTE: You may use ANY PICTURES you want FROM THE INTERNET, but if your poster is picked as the winning poster, we might have to replace the images you originally used if the organization cannot get the copyrights to it (but you will NOT LOSE MARKS on your assignment) . If you want to try to build a poster that won't violate copyright laws, use your own photography or images from on-line stock photo websites such as www.istockphoto.com or www.bigstockphoto.com or www.shutterstock.com. or any other one you like that will give us the right to use the images as part of the campaign. Some sites say "Free" to use. If you use an image from ANY ONLINE STOCKPHOTO site where we can have the rights to that photo, and your poster is chosen, then we can go to the site and pay for the image. Don't worry about the watermark on these images, you won't lose marks for that if you include it in the poster. But if you feel that the watermark interferes with the look of your poster, then consider any of the options above.
Marking Scheme For Your Assignment:
In this assignment, we do not have specific requirements as far as how many shapes and effects you need to use. Based on what you have learned from your labs and your first assignment, put together a professional poster that uses different graphic elements/techniques (shapes, opacity, text variation, effects, etc.) to create a professional poster that meets the requirements listed above. Below is the list of criteria we will be using to mark this assignment.
Criteria:
-
Photoshop File Name: uwouseraccount_poster.psd (for example: jsmit_poster.psd) NOTE: file name must be all lower case
-
Final Poster Image Name: uwouseraccount_poster.jpg (for example: jsmit_poster.jpg) NOTE: file name must be all lower case
-
Canvas size: 1400 x 1000 (or 1000 X 1400) pixels in size and 72 pixels per inch
-
Color creativity: Whether the colors co-ordinate, flow nicely with the overall look

-
Artwork Detail:
-
You can start with any image as a background or choose to work with a solid color/ blend and add images as you need them.
-
You can use any images you find on the Internet, either from the list above or from other sites but it is very important that you include a reference for each image you use (include this in the "Assignment Text" box of Owl)
-
Bleeding edges; artifacts leftover from an image you copied over and wasn't covered up properly.
-
Text: is the text easy to read, crisp, is the size of the text appropriate?
-
Artwork/element dimensions (are elements of proper dimensions relative to overall image/other elements in poster). Are elements presented in a professional way?
-

-
Evidence of title, contact information: any other key information you feel are appropriate within this poster
-
Is message evident in the content?

NOTE: Try to provide enough information to make sure the requirements are met but also remember this is a poster, so avoid being overly wordy. You must make good design decisions about what to include in your poster to make it both aesthetically pleasing to the eye and contain useful information that would attract someone to your poster.
-
Technical:
-
Files (PSD/JPEG) Must work properly and viewable from your publish area (this is when the size of your poster may become a factor)
-
All layers must be labeled with good layer names
-
References for ALL images used must be cited. Provide web site address (or explain where you got the image) for each image used in your poster. Include these references when you are doing the owl submission of your assignment. Note: you will receive an automatic 0 if references are not included. Please take a look at our previous comments about copyrighted images.
WinSCP Instructions:
Note: you are now posting to a NEW SERVER not panther so follow instructions below and make sure you put the link to your website in Owl.
STEP 1: SFTPing YOUR WEBSITE TO THE INTERNET
Due to limitations on space on Panther, for the remaining three assignments your assignments will be hosted on the Computer Science web server.
You will still be using WinSCP or Filezilla to upload your files but a few things will be different:
-
When you run WinSCP or Filezilla use the following information:
-
Host Name: publish.gaul.csd.uwo.ca
-
NOTE: on filezilla, if you are OFF Campus, you need to putt sftp://publish.gaul.csd.uwo.ca
-
Username: Your western username, for example jsmit
-
Password: The GAUL password you were sent by the computer science department at the beginning of term
-
Port: 22 (only if you are on campus or in residence), 27 (if you are using WINScp/filezilla from off campus)
-
File Protocol: This SHOULD by default be SFTP, but if it is FTP, change it to SFTP
-
You no longer have to move into public_html on the right side (remote) of WinSCP or Filezilla. You are actually put immediately into the public_html folder so you don't need to move to it.
-
On the right side of the WinSCP (or Filezilla) window, i.e. the remote machine, create a folder called assign2
-
Right click on it and double check that the permissions for the assign2 folder are 0755
-
Move into the assign2 folder
-
Drag your .psd file and your .jpg file into the remote assign2 folder
-
On the right side of the WinSCP (or Filezilla) window, i.e. the remote machine, right click on both the .jpg and .psd files and make sure the permissions are 0644
-
YOU MUST CHECK THAT YOUR UPLOAD WORKED CORRECTLY, please follow these instructions to make sure this step worked:
STEP 2: TESTING TO SEE IF YOUR WEBSITE IS VIEWABLE FROM THE INTERNET
To double check, open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox and type the following web address: http://publish.gaul.csd.uwo.ca/youruserid/assign2. For example: if your username was lreid, you would type: http://publish.gaul.csd.uwo.ca/lreid/assign2/ (notice there is no ~ before your username this time) This should display a list containing your .jpg file and your .psd file. Click on your .jpg file and make sure the image of your poster pops up in the browser. If it doesn't, you have done something wrong, try again or visit a TA during the posted consulting times.
OWL Instructions:
-
You must also submit the links to the jpg and psd files and the reference information via Owl
-
In the "Assignment Text" box for Assignment 2, you must put the following:
-
the first line of the "Assignment Text" box MUST be the web site containing your .jpg poster file (include the http://)
-
the second line MUST be the web site containing the .psd native file for your poster (include the http://)
-
a blank line
-
the fourth line MUST be the word REFERENCES:
-
the web addresses (include the http://) for each of the images used in your poster OR if you took the picture yourself (for example on your digital camera), put the image name, the words "taken by" and your name beside it.
-
Example, if your name was John Smith and your Western user account was jsmit, then here is a possible "Assignment Text" box in Owl:
http://publish.gaul.csd.uwo.ca/jsmit/assign2/jsmit_poster.jpg
http://publish.gaul.csd.uwo.ca/jsmit/assign2/jsmit_poster.psd
