Abstract
Image segmentation is a process that partitions a given image
into multiple regions, according to a given criterion. The
goal of segmentation is to simplify and change the
representation of an image into something that is more
meaningful and easier to analyze Image segmentation is
typically used for extraction of interesting objects for
further processing such as description or recognition Image
Segmentation has many practical applications, including
medical imaging, face recognition, automatic traffic
controlling systems, and machine vision.
In this report we will give a brief background on some of the
proposed research in segmenting carotid artery contours
especially in ultrasound images. We will also focus on active
contours method and give overview about its advantages and
disadvantages as a segmentation technique.
