In 2013, he decided to take a year off of teaching to study physics at Western. Instead, he discovered computer science. He never took a physics course, and he never returned to teaching high school. He graduated with a B.Sc., Honours Specialization in Computer Science and a Minor in Game Development in 2018.

He then enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Western, where he studied the Metaverse and Named Data Networking under the supervision of Dr. Hanan Lutfiyya and Dr. Mike Katchabaw.

Duff is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Ontario College of Teachers.
