Admission Procedure
In order to apply to graduate studies at Western, it is important that you understand the essential elements of the Western graduate school application. No application is considered until it is complete. The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure that all documents (e.g., transcripts, references, test results such as TOEFL scores) are submitted by the program`s deadline for application.

The Application
The application process begins with the receipt of the application along with all application requirements. Please follow THIS LINK to the Graduate Studies "Apply for Admission" web page and look for the "I WANT TO APPLY" button.
To apply for admission, a completed application must be submitted electronically, providing Western with the following:
- Biographical information
- Contact information
- Statement of academic intent (if applicable)
- Academic background
- Electronic transcripts
- Professional background (if applicable)
- Email Address of References (2)
- Application for Teaching Assistantship (available online in pdf format)
- PhD background statement (for PhD applicants) (available online in PDF format)
- Proficiency in English Scores, if applicable.
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Western's TOEFL ID is 0984. (You must arrange for ETS to send your scores to Western.)
- The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) of the British Council. (Western can verify your score using the report that you submit with your application.)
- Duolingo.
Additional Content
Western makes it possible for you to submit your supporting documents in a digital format. This includes an academic record/transcript from each school you note in your Academic History and any additional documents required by the program you are applying to.
Transcripts
Western accepts digital academic records within your application, however if you are offered admission you are required to provide one official academic transcript* from each post-secondary institution you have attended. These documents should be emailed to gradapps@uwo.ca by the issuing institution.
Past or current students of The University of Western do not need to provide transcripts for their academic history at Western. This information will be obtained internally.
Electronic References
Once your references have successfully completed the electronic reference form, you will receive confirmation that this has been submitted via e-mail. The electronic reference will be processed at Western centrally and delivered to the program(s) you have applied to in one business day.
Readmission/Reactivation
Students who have voluntarily withdrawn or who have been withdrawn and wish to complete their program must formally re-apply for admission via our application. Credit for previous work completed must be approved by the program and SGPS.
Admission Decision
Upon Western receiving your application, a confirmation e-mail will be forwarded to you providing you with information regarding your application profile at Western. This information is key to accessing your Western Personal Computer Account. Once you have activated your Computer Account you will be able to log into the Student Center, Western’s portal for student information.
As an applicant, the Western Student Center will allow you to:
- Update personal information (including contact information)
- Check your application status
- Explore the Western course catalog
- Accept an offer of admission

General Comments
Due to the large volume of applications that we receive each admission cycle, we are not able to update your status regularly. You will receive notice once a decision has been made regarding your applicaiton.
In the case that you are not admitted, we cannot transfer your file. Should you apply again, a new application, including new references, new documentation (if out-dated), and new application fees, is required.
For applicants who received their university education outside Canada or the U.S.A.
University systems in different countries vary, and quite often it is very difficult for us to interpret transcripts or degrees from foreign universities. This is particularly true if the university education does not even remotely resemble the North American or British systems. To give an example: In many countries of continental Europe there is no equivalent distinction between undergraduate and graduate studies. Hence, it is not automatically clear whether the diploma received in such a case is equivalent to a bachelor's or a master's degree.
We encourage you to provide additional information about your university education if your degrees do not match the North American model. This information is particularly important if you want to apply for admission to our PhD program, but your degree is not clearly equivalent to an MSc degree. The following information could be very helpful in such a situation: a description of the contents of your courses; a list of the textbooks you used; a summary of your thesis; an explanatory letter from a faculty member of your university knowledgeable of both yours and the North A merican university systems.
In a similar manner, the grading systems in different countries vary significantly. You should be aware that financial support and differential fee waivers are offered on the basis of the grades in your transcripts as evaluated by the Department of Computer Science. Again, if you think we might have difficulties understanding your transcripts you could help us by providing explanatory documentation, if possible by an official or a faculty member from your present university.
