Program Awards

Betty Schecter Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are self-identified women and in Year 1 of a degree in Computer Science, Faculty of Science. Candidates must exhibit strong leadership qualities, an ongoing commitment to community service and involvement in extra-curricular activities, as well as academic achievement. The Department of Computer Science will interview a short-list of candidates and select the recipients.

Value: 1 at $5,000.42

This award was established with a generous gift from Larry Schecter (Honours BSc ’85) in appreciation of his Western University experience. These years were formative and life-changing; a time to develop a solid work ethic, effective time management skills, and lifelong friendships and relationships. A key objective of this award is to identify and nurture the leaders of tomorrow who will evolve into an ongoing community of like-minded achievers who support their peers and mentor future recipients.

Big Blue Bubble Award in Gaming

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in Year 3 of a program in Computer Science or Data Science in the Faculty of Science, or in Year 4 of a concurrent BSc/HBA degree in one of these disciplines, based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and demonstrated knowledge or skills in gaming and/or programming. Preference will be given to candidates who are interested in completing a 4-month summer internship following third year or fourth year or a 16-month internship after third year with Big Blue Bubble. Recipients are not obligated to participate in the work term or accept employment with Big Blue Bubble following graduation to receive the award. Candidates must be eligible for employment in Canada. Work terms generally will be in London, Ontario, but opportunities may include remote work. Recipients will be paid at standard rates for student interns within Big Blue Bubble's organization for each work term, exclusive of the award. 

The Department of Computer Science will shortlist candidates who may be interviewed by a representative of Big Blue Bubble. The Faculty of Science will make the final selection of recipients. Recipients may also have an opportunity to interview for a work term or internship with Big Blue Bubble in a technology position. Students are not guaranteed a work term or internship with the sponsor.

Effective: 2023-2024 to 2027-2028 academic years inclusive 

Big Blue Bubble is an established video game developer in London Ontario with over 15 years of experience creating fun, innovative, and accessible titles. They are a pioneer in the gaming industry and have developed more than 100 titles since it was incorporated in 2004.

Chris Binns-Smith Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in Year 1 of a degree in Computer Science, Faculty of Science. Candidates must exhibit strong leadership qualities, an ongoing commitment to community service and involvement in extra-curricular activities, as well as academic achievement. The Department of Computer Science will interview a short-list of candidates and select the recipients.

John Schecter Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science

Larry Schecter Computer Science Continuing Scholarship

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in Year 3 of an honours degree in Computer Science, Faculty of Science who exhibit strong leadership qualities, an ongoing commitment to community service and involvement in extra-curricular activities, as well as academic achievement. Students in a combined BSc/HBA degree are not eligible. Recipients will continue to receive the award in Year 4, if they maintain full-time status in Computer Science and a minimum academic average of 80%. The Department of Computer Science will interview a short-list of candidates and select the recipients. A replacement recipient will be selected from the same cohort if a student no longer qualifies to retain their scholarship.

PointClickCare Women in Computer Science Award

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in Year 3 of a program in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, who are interested in completing a summer or full-year internship, based on academic achievement. Preference is given to candidates who are self-identified women in programs where they are under-represented. Recipients will have an opportunity to interview for a work term or internship with PointClickCare in a technology position. Recipients are not guaranteed a work term or internship with PointClickCare. The Department of Computer Science will select the recipients. Recipients are not obligated to participate in the work term or accept employment with PointClickCare to receive or retain the award. 

Value: 5 at $10,000, awarded annually 

Effective: 2023-2024 to 2025-2026 academic years inclusive.

RBC Scholarship in Data Science

Awarded annually to students in Year 3 of a Computer Science, Data Sciences, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, or Physics program within Western Science or in Year 4 of a combined BSc/HBA degree in one of these disciplines based on academic achievement and an interest in pursuing a career in big data, data science, artificial intelligence, or advanced analytics. Students will be required to complete an application form in accordance with the deadline announced annually by Science (September 30). A limited number of applicants will be chosen to participate in an interview. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or eligible to work in Canada. A selection committee made up of representatives from the Faculty of Science will short list applicants for the scholarship. Short listed candidates will be interviewed by a representative of the Sponsor, a member of Undergraduate Services and the Director of the Computer and Data Science Programs or designate. Final selection of recipients will be made by the Faculty of Science. Recipients will have an opportunity to interview for a work term or internship with the Sponsor in a technology position. Students are not guaranteed a work term or internship with the Sponsor. An offer of full-time employment with the Sponsor may also be extended pending successful completion of the program and work term, at the Sponsor’s sole discretion. A recipient is not obligated to participate in the work term or accept employment with the Sponsor to receive the scholarship. This scholarship was established by RBC to promote and encourage students in STEM to pursue technology careers in banking.
Value: 5 scholarships of $15,000 each annually
Effective: 2024-2025 to 2027-2028 academic years inclusive.

Sylvia Osborn Northern Ontario Scholarship in Computer Science

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in Year 3 or 4 in Computer Science, based on academic achievement in the previous year (minimum 80% average) who is from Northern Ontario. Candidates must complete a one-page statement outlining the details regarding their Northern Ontario residency by September 30th to the Computer Science Department Office. The scholarship committee in Computer Science will select the recipient. This scholarship was established by a generous donation from Professor Sylvia L. Osborn.

Value: 1 at $1,000

Effective Date: 2024-2025.

Dr. Sylvia Osborn was born and raised in Timmins, Ontario, and after receiving her Bachelor’s, Masters and PhD degrees, all in Computer Science, from the University of Waterloo, she began teaching in Computer Science at Western. She taught for 40 years, until her retirement. She served on the University Senate, was Acting Chair of Computer Science and taught at every level from introductory courses to advanced research topics. Dr. Osborn established this scholarship to encourage students from Northern Ontario to study Computer Science. Dr. Osborn died in 2018.

WSIB Computer Science Continuing Award

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students entering Year 3, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science based on academic achievement and their career interest in Computer Science. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or eligible to work in Canada. The award will continue in Year 4 provided that recipients maintain a 70% average and full-time status in Computer Science. If a recipient does not qualify to maintain the award, a replacement recipient in the same year will be selected. Recipients will have an opportunity to interview for a work term or internship with WSIB. Students are not guaranteed a work term or internship with WSIB. An offer of full-time employment with WSIB may also be extended pending successful completion of the program and work term, at WSIB’s sole discretion. A recipient is not obligated to participate in the work term or accept employment with WSIB following graduation to receive or retain the award. Students must complete an application form in accordance with the deadline announced annually by the Faculty of Science (approx. September 30). A limited number of applicants will be chosen to participate in an interview. A selection committee made up of representatives from the Faculty of Science will shortlist applicants for the award. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a representative from WSIB, a member of Science Undergraduate Services and the Chair of Computer Science or their designates. Final selection of recipients will be made by the Faculty of Science. This award is made possible by a contribution from the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB). 

Value: 1 at $7,500, awarded annually, continuing for 2 years.
Effective: 2024-2025 to 2029-2030 academic years inclusive.
